Natural Calamities/Disasters of Bangladesh
Bangladesh is the darling child of nature. Nature has decorated this country with her precious wealth. The Bay of Bengal lies in the south of the country. The country is criss-crossed by many rivers. All these have made this country a paradise on the earth. But nature sometimes takes a destructive form and devastates the whole country. Every year the country is visited by different natural calamities. If this month we suffer from drought the next month we suffer from flood. The people of Bangladesh are really the victim of natural calamities. Their life has become tragic and they are noting but the toys at the hand of nature.
Every year some common natural calamities like flood, cyclone, tidal bores, excessive rainfall, earthquake, river erosion, drought etc attack our land and cause much destruction. Greenhouse house effect and arsenic problem are two other vital natural calamities though man is to a great extent responsible for these disasters. Among all the disasters, flood and cyclone are the two main natural disasters that visit Bangladesh frequently.
Flood is one of the worst devastating natural calamities. The rise of water is called flood. Our country almost every year faces this natural calamity which causes untold miseries for the people. There are many reasons which cause flood in this country. Excessive and continuous rain for days together, lack of proper drainage, river siltation etc are the causes of flood. Flood causes heavy havocs of our assets and properties. It also washes away our cattle and even our lives. After the recession of flood water, people have to suffer a lot. Then the scarcity of food becomes acute. Various kinds of diseases like cholera, typhoid, and dysentery break out in an epidemic form.
As we suffer from the excess of water we also suffer from the lack of water in the dry season. Sometimes rainlessness causes severe droughts in summer. As a result, the farmers can not grow crops and sowing in the field is delayed. The barrage of Farakka contributes to the drought situation of the country. Almost 20-45% land of Bangladesh is being affected by droughts. We have already noticed a desertification process in North Bengal. Water level goes down and it affects our agriculture.
Cyclones occur in Bangladesh almost every year. They are attended with lightning and thunder and very often with heavy rainfall. The Bay of Bengal is an ideal breeding place for tropical cyclones. Cyclones are usually formed in deep seas. It sweeps over all the coastal areas with tremendous speed. Every year a number of tropical cyclones hit Bangladesh. Among them, the most deadly cyclones are the cyclones of 1970, 1991, SIDR of 2007.
It is not possible to take any steps to prevent natural calamities. But we can take some protective measures to lessen the sufferings of the people. We should plant more trees in the coastal belt of our country to avoid cyclones. We should also set up sufficient cyclone shelter centres. Besides, weather forecast should be given timely so that loss of human lives and property can be reduced.
During natural calamities, the beautiful nature wears a furious appearance. They have become part of the lives of the people of our country. We can not avoid natural calamities but we can certainly reduce the loss if the government and people work jointly. We must remember that we can not change the will of the nature but we can certainly reduce the losses caused by natural calamities.
